Their Eyes Were Watching God chs. 17 & 18
Janie and Te Cake have made a life for themselves down on the "Muck" and janie is happier than she has ever been. The only hiccup in their happy life is Mrs. Turner's plans for Janie and her brother. When Tea Cake explains Mrs. Turner's plan to Sop-de- Bottom the men devise a plan of their own. What do they decide to do? What is the end result of their plan? In chapter 18 the seminal event of the book occurs when a hurricane hits the Everglades. What do Janie and Tea Cake decide to do in the face of the hurricane initially? Who is with them? What eventually changes their mind regarding their previous actions? Later, Janie nearly drowns in flood waters and Tea Cake has to save her from a vicious dog that is standing on the back of a cow. Tea Cake kills the dog, but not before he gets bit. Predict what you believe the outcome of the flood events will be in chapter 19. Please phrase your response in complete sentences. Spelling and grammar will count. You have until January 2nd to complete this assignment.

Next Week's Schedule
Because I will not be at school on Friday, I am making some changes to the original information I gave out in class. Note book tests for all classes will be Thursday instead of Friday. This means that 11th grade students will be reading and watching Their Eyes Were Watching God on Friday instead of the regularly scheduled Thursday reading. Organization day for all classes will be Tuesday. 11th grade students will still have a test on chapter 17 of the textbook on Wednesday. On Tuesday in class we will discuss chapter 13 of Their Eyes Were Watching God. Chapters 14- 16 will be discussed here.
Saturday, December 8, 2012
Thier Eyes Were Watching God, chs. 11 & 12
In chapter 11 Janie and Tea Cake begin to grow closer, and Janie comes to see that Tea Cake really does care for the person that she is. What are some of the fears she expressed in chapter 11 about Tea Cake? In chapter 12 we see some of the town's reaction to the two of them dating. What is that reaction, and what do you think lies behind it? Phoeby is sort of appointed the town's representative to go talk to Janie. How does Janie explain her idea of love to Phoeby? What surprising news does Janie share with Phoeby about her future plans in Eatonville and her future plans with Tea Cake?
You must post your comment by Monday at midnight. Remember to phrase your response in complete sentences. Spelling and grammar will count.
Saturday, December 1, 2012
Their Eyes Were Watching God, chs. 6 & 7
In chapter 6 of the book we see more of Janie and Joe's relationship, and how and why Janie comes to resent the store. Joe thinks she should look around at all he has given her and be happy to have it. "Here he was just pouring honor all over her; building a high chair for her to sit in an overlook the world and she here pouting over it!" How does this sentence show a contrast between what Joe views as happiness and what we discussed in class as Janie's idea of happiness? How does Joe view women's roles in general? Explain how his ideas caused a lot of disagreement between him and Janie. Be specific by giving examples. What does Janie mean by this statement: "The spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was there to shake hands when people came to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom again." In what way does Janie deal a tremendous blow to Joe in chapter 7? What does she take from him, or what does he feel he has lost by her actions?
To receive full credit you must answer all the questions in complete sentences in your own words. You may respond to classmates by adding to what they say, but you will recieve no credit for repeating another poster's comments. You may also ask questions of each other that seek clarification of previous comments. Please remember that you are writing for an audience; spelling and grammar count. Comments must be posted by Monday at midnight. Late comments will not be graded.

The following method seems to be the only one that is working: 1. click "share" 2. click "copy" 3. paste the copied link into YOUR email 4. send the email to me.

Describe the reaction of the townspeople when they find out about them in chapter 12. Why are Janie's friends so against them being together? Their Eyes Were Watching God, chs 8 & 9
In chapter 8, after Janie and Joe have a very public fight in which she questions his manhood, Joe moves ut of their bedroom. His health steadily deteriorates and he refuses to see her. He instead surrounds himself with people who tell him what he wants to hear. This hurts Janie but she doesn't tell Joe that. In chapter 8 to what does Hurlston compare rumor? Why is this an apt comparison? What is the first thing Janie does after Joe dies? Why is this important to her? In chapter 9 during Joe's funeral, a contrast is drawn between Janie's inside and outside and what she was feeling. Her sorrow is all on the outside, not because she is actually sad, but because its what people expect. What does she feel on the inside? What do YOU think about this? Is it disrespectful? Or understandable? Why? Janie also comes to realize that she has ambivalent feelings about Nanny. Why does she hate her grandmother, when as far as the outside world can see she has had a good life?

Their Eyes Were Watching God, chs 1-4
The opening paragraph in the book draws a distinction between men and women, and how they view their dreams and desires. Hurston portrays women as being more practical because they build their dreams around the truth, while men wish for things they can never attain. The people on the porch are presented to us as something less than human, but again the difference between the thoughts of the men and the thoughts of the women are made apparent. The men hold on to her image as an object of their fantasy, while the women show their envy. Chapter 1 occurs in the present. Chapter 2 and subsequent chapters occur in the past as Janie tells her life story to Phoeby. We learn that she was raised by her grandmother, and that she was a product of rape, and that the children she went to school with made fun of her because she lived on the white peoples' property. Why were they REALLY making fun of her? Did you find it interesting that Janie said she didn't realize she was black until she was about 6 years old? In ch 3 Janie comes to see Nanny to talk to her about marriage. What is it she wants to know? There is a distinct difference between what Janie wants for herself & what Nanny wants. What does Janie want? What does Nanny want for her? How does Nanny measure happiness? What is the 'bloom time, green time & orange time' that Janie waited? In chapter 4 we meet Joe Starks. What is it about Joe that attracts Janie? Why is she still hesitant to leave with him? What is the 'far horizon' she speaks of?
