Their Eyes Were Watching God chs. 17 & 18

Janie and Te Cake have made a life for themselves down on the "Muck" and janie is happier than she has ever been. The only hiccup in their happy life is Mrs. Turner's plans for Janie and her brother. When Tea Cake explains Mrs. Turner's plan to Sop-de- Bottom the men devise a plan of their own. What do they decide to do? What is the end result of their plan? In chapter 18 the seminal event of the book occurs when a hurricane hits the Everglades. What do Janie and Tea Cake decide to do in the face of the hurricane initially? Who is with them? What eventually changes their mind regarding their previous actions? Later, Janie nearly drowns in flood waters and Tea Cake has to save her from a vicious dog that is standing on the back of a cow. Tea Cake kills the dog, but not before he gets bit. Predict what you believe the outcome of the flood events will be in chapter 19. Please phrase your response in complete sentences. Spelling and grammar will count. You have until January 2nd to complete this assignment.

  1. Tea Cake beats Janie to show that he still has control over her. But afterwards, he tries to pamper her and she's okay with it. All the men are envious of him because all of the power he has over Janie. Tea Cake tells them that they are going to wait out the storm. I predict that the flood will have killed everyone in its path and that they will try to rebuild the town with the people that survived.

  3. I predict he will get a sickness and start to act crazy towards Janie. He will begin to get very sick and can't be around her at all and the doctors will tell her to keep her distance. Tea Cake will begin to bite on Janie. The doctor will take to long to come back and Tea Cake will try to kill Janie because the sickness will take over his body but she will kill him in return.

  4. In chapter 17 the book gets a little mor action. Mrs. Tucker decides to bring her brother around Janie. Tea Cake seemed to think Mrs. Tucker was trying to fix Janie and her brother up when she went to introduce him to everyone. After Mrs. Tucker did that Tea Cake whipped Janie not cause of her action but to let the towns folks and Mrs.Tucker know he was in charge of his marriage. The plan that Tea Cake, Sop-de-Bottom and the other men devised was to run Mrs. Tucker out of town. After devising the plan amongst each other later that night they gathered at Mrs. Tucker house for dinner. That Saturday night Coodemay and Sterrett can in to Mrs. Tucker's house drunk and they was talking trash. After a few exchanges of words and pushing and shoving Tea Cake decides to try and put them out of Mrs. Tucker's house and the escalated to a huge brawl amongst a few of the people in the house. The brawl left Mrs. Tucker on the floor in broken glass and etc. However the end result of the fight mad Mrs. Tucker want to move back to Miami, and have a very disputed argument with her husband. Nevertheless, in chapter 18 this is when the storm begins. Janie sees plenty of people and Indians journeying out towards the east and she doesn't know why. Janie decides to ask and a man tells her it was going to be a big storm/ hurricane, so she sets off the tell Tea Cake. Many of the towns folks left but Tea Cake and Janie decides that they want to stay because Tea Cake believed that the storm would just blow over and they would be able to got to work the next day. However people came to take the out east but Tea Cake refused and He and Janie stayed home. At Tea Cake and Janie's house that evening they has Muck Boy and Motor Boat over, and Tea Cake and Motor Boat played a little dice game but not for money. Following their dice game they heard thunder and lightening then they saw the rain gushing down this is what changes their mind on staying in the Everglades muck. Tea Cake decides to go looking for a car and he couldn't find on so he tell Janie to get the money and etc. and they was going to walk as far away from the quarters as they could Janie didn't want but Tea Cake said they could make it. I predict that in chapter 19 the flood is probably going to wipe out many of the people that stay and kill Motor Boat and Tea Cake on their journey with Janie to the east.

  5. In Chapter 17 Janie & Tea Cake meets Mrs. Tucker brother. Tea Cake has suspicion that Mrs. Tucker is trying to hook her brother up with Janie.Later on Tea Cake beats her to let everyone know including Janie that he is in charge of the relationship. In 18 this is where the storm begins.During the storm everyone has left to get away from the storm except Janie & Tea Cake.I predict that the flood is going to do damage to the town nut no one will be harm in the process.

  6. Within chapter 17 Tea Cake strikes Janie. It wasn't her action that cause it but because Mrs. Tucker brought her brother around and introduced him to the other town people. Tea Cake thought Mrs. Tucker was trying to fix the tow up so he struck Janie to so ownership or possession over there relationship. Tea Cake and the other mean devised a plan to get Mrs. Tucker out of town. Soon the men eventually ended up at Mrs. Tucker's home for dinner. Later on a brawl broke out that made the plan that the men devised a success because Mrs. Tucker wanted to go back to Miami. In chapter 18 a massive hurricane is blowing threw the Everglades. Tea Cake and Janie decided to wait the storm of with Motor Boat. After the storm became furious Tea Cake decides to find a car but web he couldn't he told then that they would have to walk to get to safer grounds. However I predict in chapter 19 that a mass majority if the people in the town are going to die, and some that are left will try to rebuild their homes.

  7. Tea Cake beats janie to show that he still holds all control over her. After the beating Tea cake tries treating and pampering her she forgives him. Almost all the men are jealous of Tea cake because of all the power was he has over janie. Tea cake states that they are going to wait till the storm passes. I think the flood will have killed a few people and make the survivors closer because they will have to rebuild the damaged town.

  8. In chapter 17, Janie and Tea Cake meets Mrs. Tucker brother. Tea Cake didn't like what Mrs. Tucker was trying to do. So to show Janie, Mrs. Tucker, and the other folks that he was the boss and in control of their relationship; Tea Cake whipped Janie and slapped her around. And after all that he treated her good like nothing has happened at all. When Tea Cake explained what Mrs. Tucker planned to Sop-de-Bottom the men decided that they was going to have Mrs. Tucker gone before two weeks up. At the end, they had a big fight at Mrs. Tucker place and everything was messed up. So Mrs. Tucker told her husband that they are going to move back to Miami. In chapter 18, Tea Cake decided that him and Janie are going to wait the storm out. And at this point of time they was all by themselves because everybody else had left before the storm came. But when they saw how the weather was getting worst and how the storm was destroying everything; they wanted to leave then but it was too late. In chapter 19, I predict that half of the people who live down in the Muck has died but the rest that are still alive will try they best to help rebuild they little town and homes.

  9. Tea Cake wanted to make Janie see he has the control over them and their relationship so he put his hands on her. A sign of jealousy that was it may seem as but after he done that to Janie he tried to gain her forgiveness. He has total control ober her and he feels as if he can do as he please. Chapter 18 Tea Cake feels as if the storm wont be so bad so he decides to stay behind...there was alot of horrible damage after the stoem and when others returned they all helped build thigs back to what they once were...

  12. Teacake found out about the comments that Mrs. Turner had said about him. The two men came up with a plan to run Mrs. Turner out of town. They went to Mrs. Turner's place and a fignt broke out. Teacake tried to get one of the fellas to leave. Mrs. Turner got caught up in the fight and fell down, then her hand got stamped on and her fingers bled. The end result of the plan was that Mrs. Turner told her husband that she wanted to move back to Miami. When the storm initally began, Teacake and Janie decided they were going to stay and wait the storm out. They thought that the storm would clear up by the next day. Out of all of the guys that played dice, everyone decided to leave except for Motor Boat. Motor Boat stayed with them. The storm was getting very bad so Teacake advised Janie that it was best for them to leave. The wind was twisting everything around and water had gotten knee-high deep. At this point, Teacake and Janie left Motor Boat behind to get to safety. In chapter 19, I predict that lots of people died and did not make it to safety. The town would have to be rebuilt.
