Their Eyes Were Watching God, chs. 6 & 7
In chapter 6 of the book we see more of Janie and Joe's relationship, and how and why Janie comes to resent the store. Joe thinks she should look around at all he has given her and be happy to have it. "Here he was just pouring honor all over her; building a high chair for her to sit in an overlook the world and she here pouting over it!" How does this sentence show a contrast between what Joe views as happiness and what we discussed in class as Janie's idea of happiness? How does Joe view women's roles in general? Explain how his ideas caused a lot of disagreement between him and Janie. Be specific by giving examples. What does Janie mean by this statement: "The spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was there to shake hands when people came to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom again." In what way does Janie deal a tremendous blow to Joe in chapter 7? What does she take from him, or what does he feel he has lost by her actions?

Joe thinks that women are the ones that should do all the work and let them be the ones to tell them what to do. He just wants to be the boss and not do anything but flash the money that he has. A lot of disagreement between he and Janie were that she thought he was boring and he said that he was just responsible. She has grown unattractive from him and the feeling for him is gone. She takes away the reputation he thought he had. He tried to insult her but it all backfired on him and she taught him a lesson. All that she had building up all these years had finally come out and he didnt know what to do or say in front of the men.

ReplyDeleteJoe thinks that men should tell women what to do while the women just do work around the house. Joe only cares about being the big man and show his money around. Janie thinks that Joe is boring and unattractive and that caused a lot of Disagreements. Janie stripped Joe of his manhood/Rep. Joe tried to talk about Janie but suffered bad Karma from it, Janie taught Joe a lesson. After letting everything out Joe was speechless and didn't have much to say in front of the other men. I feel like Janie and Joe are not at all good for each other. Janie wants love and affection and doesn't get that from Joe. But eventually she does.
ReplyDeleteJoe feels that men should have control of women and that the men should do nothing. joe only cares about money and himself. Janie and Joe have a lot of disagreements because Janie thinks Joe is boring and all the feelings Janie had for Joe was gone. Joe is always trying to insult Janie. One day Janie finallys gets tired of him and tells him off in front of the men and Joe turns speechless and doesn't feel like a big man anymore.
ReplyDeleteThis chapter really goes back to when her grandma said that women are the mules of the earth.Joe really sees her as almost a serveant to him that he controls. Now that Joe has all this money and popularity its starting to get to his head and he just wants to show it off to get the attention. This Janie doesnt find attractive and she finds herself back in the same situation as the first husband where she really doesnt love him and has no intrest. Joe tries to bad mough her but Jaine fires back, leaving him lost for words infront of his friends. Janie and joe are not working out and all the love and affection first experienced is now gone.
ReplyDeleteFrom My intepretatioin of the Chapters 6&7, Joe is a man that is full of himself. He thinks that men should control women, and women have no say over anything in their lives. Joe thinks that by having all the money in the world will buy/make love in a relationship, but as we discussed in previous chapters Janie wants true love. she wants to know how love feels and in Joe she doesn't see that as the years go on. In chapter 7 we begin to see a change. Joe is starting to get old and to take attention away from him he would say something negative to Janie about her getting old or her being an old woman. Janie had gotten tired with Joe and she then took his sense of pride. Janie had embarrassed him in front of some the town folks about his manhood and Joe did what he knew best. Joe then struck Janie and took her home from the store.
ReplyDeleteJoe is the type of person who feels that he have to be in charge and in control of everything that goes on. He is a man who gets anything he wants, no matter what it is. So he feels that he can make Janie happy and feel loved by buying her different things. Joe thinks that women should be housewives and do whatever the men tell them to do. He thinks all men should be in control of their life and their women's life, too. Joe ideas caused alot of disagreements between him and Janie because of the things he would say or do. For example, like when they had the ceremony over the mule, he complained about the people having fun. He said that he wish they would be more responsible and handle there business. Then to be playing and joking around. In the statement, Janie means that her marriage is gone down the drain. All her feelings and love that she had for Joe is all gone and that she pretends that she loves him when people be around them but deep down inside and when they be alone, there's no love or feelings at all. She's just not attracted to him anymore. Janie deal a tremendous blow when Joe was talking bad about her infront of company. So Janie stood up for herself and started embarrassing Joe. When Janie did that, she took away the power that he felt he had over her and other people and he feels he lost all of his respect that people gave and also had for him. So now he as nothing to say.
ReplyDeleteIn Chapter 6 Joe Came off as a low down kind of guy. Joe treated Janie like a mule. Joe was a controling and demanding type of guy. He didn't want janie to do nothing but work in the store and go home and cook in the kitchen. Joe feels as women are only on the world to do all the things that the men say. Joe feels that if he takes care of Janie and gives her everything make her something she's not then she be grateful but in chapter 7 things change. Chapter 7 is a when Janie get fed up wit Joe's mess and takes a stand. Joe was starting to get old and eveything Janie did wrong he would fine a way to bring her down by calling her old to make himself feel better. Janie then talked about his manhood in front of everyone around the porch that not only embarrased him, but that took some pride away from him. That made Joe feel like he had lost control of her and the town people, and he then struck Janie to make himself feel like he was on top again.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone explain what the head rag symbolizes?
ReplyDeletewell to me Janie act like she doesnt want a bad life she just want a great life..the contrast i see between joe and janie is that janie feels that being happy is living highly and joe thinks a good life is being stuck in the house just like the color purple movie when the the man ( danny glover) and celia how she was scared of him because he was a grown man. Joe views women's roles as being scared, shutdown: joe is dominant controllive, possessive, he likes things his way.Joes ways caused alot of disagreement by what i just said...being too controllive. In chapter 7 janie notices that jody has begun to quite old, he started having trouble moving around and his body sags.janie finally releases her pent-up aggression. She insults his sagging body and declares that he looks like "de change uh life" when naked.

ReplyDeleteJanie thinks that love is happiness, while Joe thinks that material things are happiness. Joe believe that women belong in the kitchen. Joe's ideas caused disagreements because they were not things Janie wanted to do. Like the time Joe wanted Janie to work the store but she didnt. The marriage was kind of dead , janie no longer wanted to be there. They acted as if everything was good to the public but behind closed doors it wasnt. Joes reputation was kind of his manhood and she basically took it away from him.
Joe makes Janie wear a head rag when she is in public because her hair is so attractive to men and he doesnt like when they look at her. He doesnt want other men to look at her, he wants Janie all to himself.
ReplyDeleteIn Chapter 6 Joe feels like women is inferior to men.Joe is the type of guy who treat women like crap.He feels like women should always listen to the men and do what they say.Joe treats Janie like she is nothing and he cant give her nothing. In Chapter 7 everything change.Janie got tired of his mess and she stands up for herself. She gets tired of him always trying to bring her down. One day while they are in front of everyone she brings him down by talking about his manhood. That really did a number on him, that's when he hits her to make himself feel superior again.
ReplyDeleteVery good, Demani. The head rag symbolizes his control over her.
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteIn Chapter 6, Joe feels that women should do all the work.. he thinks that the world revolves around him, he feels that women should do all the work around the kithen. He thinks that he control Janie, by having her to do all the hard work around the post office & at home. He treated Janie like she was nothing to him. Joe wanted Janie to do everything he demanded her to do. Joe wanted Janie to wear the head rag because of her long hair that made it attractive to men. He wanted Janie to his self. Chapter 7, Janie began to stand up for herself. She began to get fed up over Joe. One day, Janie confronted Joe about his (ManHood) in front of everyone on the porch. Joe grew anger inside that made him slap Janie in front of everyone, that made Joe feel like he was a man again .
ReplyDeleteJoe feels that you can find happiness in material things, while Janie feels that love is happiness. Joe thinks that by everything that he gives to Janie, she is suppose to accept it and just be happy for what she is given, but Joe fails to realize that it is not always about the material things in life. Joe is that person that thinks that women are used as mens slaves. They are supposed to wait on them hand and foot, when it is not like that. Janie does everything that Joe wants her to do, but in return she is treated like nothing. Joe puts her down and doesn't think twice about it. Janie just has all this anger built up until one day, she just exploded. All of her anger came to the light and she let it be known that she didn't like how she was being treated, but Joe didn't like that at all. He was so embarrassed so he slapped Janie, and once that was done he felt like the man he thought he always was before. Truly, he is not a real man if he has to use his woman as a slave and put his hands on her.
ReplyDeleteJoe’s definition of happiness is when everything is handed to you or done for you, but not by you. He thinks that if he provides everything for Janie, it’s going to give her happiness. Janie thinks otherwise. Her definition of happiness is being able to do for herself and be loved at the same time. She prefers to have a voice instead of her husband speaking for her. Joe thinks women should be put in their place. He thinks women should take care of household things like cooking and cleaning. This caused a lot of disagreements like when Janie asked to go to the draggin’-out with Joe. He wouldn’t let her because he said that wasn’t a place for the mayor’s wife to be. By the statement, "The spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was there to shake hands when people came to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom again.” Janie meant that in the beginning of the marriage, everything started off great and it was all she ever wanted, but as time passed, things changed and it wasn’t the same anymore. In chapter 7, Janie takes up for herself and starts speaking her mind to Joe; something she’s never done. He felt like Janie had robbed him of his illusion of irresistible maleness that all men cherish.
ReplyDeleteJoe was demanding. He wanted Janie to do whatever he said. Joe thought that by her buying everything being mayor and Janie just being his wife that she should make her happy. Joe also thought that she had no right acting like one of those other girls in the street and she should be at home. They always disagreed because Joe thought that women had no say so over their lives and the men ruled them, and that's not how Janie saw it. In chapter 7 joe felt that everything was taken away from him when Janie embarrassed him and talked about everything he wasn't doing right and his man hood. Joe was embarrassed and he felt he had lost his since of pride. Not only did Janie say it to him but she said it front of some of the towns people. Janie was down right tired of his disrespectful acts towards her but at the end Joe hit her and took we home.
ReplyDeleteJanie views happiness as love and compatibility, whereas Joe feels that Janie should do what society, at the time, depicts as a woman's role in life. He feels that she should abide by his rules and accept what he gives her and everything shall be okay. To ousiders looking in, their relationship may seem perfect, but in actuality it's not. Janie is looking for something much more than Joe can offer her. In Chapter 7, Janie decides to hide her true feelings no longer and she speaks. But Joe does not take kind to this newfound courage and openness. He feels as if Janie is stepping out of her boundaries as a woman and robbing him of his manly pride.
ReplyDeleteTo me in chapter 6 Joe is now showing his bighead side expressions of feeling that he is a king and he feels as though women dont know anything they are to just be house wifes. The complete opposite of how JAnie feels she is looking for love and the that feeling she longs for in her imagination and when she first met Joe he showed that but now he is courageously changing. On to Chapter 7 Janie hides her expressions and words Joe has now become very disrespectful and speaks to her however he pleases and feels as though she shouldnt respond back .. he is showing, forming, and becoming the man that Janies grandmother tried to keep her away from.
ReplyDeleteI felt as if Joe was sweet talking in the beginning but as soin as he got her he made her feel as if she was a maid. He thinks that women should be kept to house work while men take the credit for everything. She began to lose love for him. He showes his true colors which drove her away from him. Example: when he made the comment about "she ain't no speakee, I ain't marry her for that" she felt embarrassed and hurt. The love they had really started to fade away. He was considered a "good husband" when others were around but not when they were alone. He begins to realize things when Karma reflects on him.

Joe was all for himself. He treated Jamie like a mule. He think women should do what men say. Joe feel like this if he give Janie what she want she should do what say. He. Just want to be the boss of Janie and the poeple of the town. Chapter 7 is basically about when Janie get fed up whit joe bossing her around. One day she embarrassed him in front of his friends . Later he lost control over Janie and the people of the town.
ReplyDeleteJoe is the type of person who think he is the boss of everything. He thinks that women can't express how they feel. He thinks that they should stay at home and do house work. Joe was nice at first but now he is showing his true colors. Joe is arrogant, disrespectful, and don't know how to treat a woman. He is turning into the man her grandmother didn't want her to have.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 6, Joe started feeling like the world revolved around him because of what he accomplished. He feels that Janie should do what he tells her to do. Janie idea of happiness is by her wanting have a great husband . Joe idea of happiness is him buying her everything she wanted and being the man of the house . Joe view on women's role is that women should do what the husband tell them to do. His ideas of her doing what ever he wanted was a big disagreement because Janie didn't think thats what her life would be like with him. An example of this is when he when he told her to wear a head rag because it would attract other men. The statement Janie said meant that the love they had for each other disappeared and there is no love in the bedroom. In chapter 7 she stood up for herself. Joe felt that he lost control of Janiie in chapter 7

The Contrast Between What Joe Views As Happiness He Thinks Everything Should Be Brought To Him On A Silver Platter & Janie Idea Of Happiness Is Being Independent & Allowing Her To Be Herself. Joe Basically Views Women As Servants. He Thinks Janie Should Stay Home All Day & Just Clean, Cook, & Fulfill Joe's Needs. Which Caused Allot Of Disagreements Between The Two Of Them Because Janie Felt Differently. By this statement: "The spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was there to shake hands when people came to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom again." Janie means Everything Was Fine & Dandy When They Were Newlyweds But As Days Past By It Was Nothing Like Before. In Chapter 7 Janie Final Expressed How She Feels And Joe Hit Her. Joe Felt That He Lost His "Manly Hood" When Janie Expressed How She Felt So He Hits Her To Make Himself Feel Like A Man.
I think that even though Joe has money that he thinks he can rule everything although he is the Mayor. Janie here to me seems that she is not pleased because Joe was trying to make her feel good, but he also was leaving her out of things that she wanted to be involved in like talking to people. Also Joe viewed other women that he sometimes imagines they wanted to be in Janie’s shoes because she has a wealthy husband. Joe and Janie had many disagreements. One was that Joe wanted Janie to mind him but Janie told him that he don’t tell her what to do so he was controlling and making her feel stupid. An additional was when Janie was fighting with her tongue and loss which meant that he was interrupting her and not giving her any say so. When Janie says that “spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was to shake hands when people came to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom again” meant that Joe left the love of their marriage to live in a room where he shows all the consideration to other people when they came around but never brought that love back to her in the bedroom. So Janie made a tremendous blow to Joe by giving away what she didn’t value (money) to people that need it. Finally Janie takes all the aspiration and brutal ways in life that didn’t matter and Joe now realize that he has no respect for himself and other people and now he was not getting anything in respond from his wife because she was tired of being treated like nothing.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 6, Joe thought that everything revolved around him. He is very selfish. He said that he wish they would be more responsible and handle there business. Joe thought that women fell below him, and he used them for his personal footstool.Chapter 7 is when Janie starts to get tired of Joe's mess and starts to defend herself. Joe was starting to get old and eveything Janie did wrong he would find a way to bring her down. Joe and Janie's relationship is taking a turn for the worst.
