Their Eyes Were Watching God, chs 8 & 9
In chapter 8, after Janie and Joe have a very public fight in which she questions his manhood, Joe moves ut of their bedroom. His health steadily deteriorates and he refuses to see her. He instead surrounds himself with people who tell him what he wants to hear. This hurts Janie but she doesn't tell Joe that. In chapter 8 to what does Hurlston compare rumor? Why is this an apt comparison? What is the first thing Janie does after Joe dies? Why is this important to her? In chapter 9 during Joe's funeral, a contrast is drawn between Janie's inside and outside and what she was feeling. Her sorrow is all on the outside, not because she is actually sad, but because its what people expect. What does she feel on the inside? What do YOU think about this? Is it disrespectful? Or understandable? Why? Janie also comes to realize that she has ambivalent feelings about Nanny. Why does she hate her grandmother, when as far as the outside world can see she has had a good life?

In chapter 8 the first thing she do after he die is sit and think about all the time that passed since she met him. She also looks in the mirror and untie her hair. In chapter 9 she feels happy and released. I think she should feel this way because he didnt treat her right and now that he is dead maybe she can find her one that can treat right. I don't think it is disrespectful he didnt treat her like his queen. She begins to realize that she hates her grandmother because of the way he grandmother raised her. Her grandmother didnt raise her to chase her dreams she raised her to search for perfect wealth and security.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing she did wen he died was untie the the cloth from her hair. When she did that she felt free and more of like being a new person. She laet him tear her down for to long. And i really do think she deserve to feel free because he never treat her like a man should treat women. And when came to realize that she didnt like her grandmother i didnt blame her. Her grandmother did not let janie pick anything in her life. She choose janie husband she wanted her to have a man that haves money and a place to stay for her never to struggle. But janie never wanted her grandmother to pick her husband she wanted love n happiness and her grandmother wanted money and safety for her.
ReplyDeleteThe resson whyit hurts janie so much is becaue people tells him the wrong artifac of thing instead the real truth.WHen joe die janie takes of thr scarf thatshe had on her head. It was a relief of stress to her to finaly take it off. I understand her aspect because she went threw alot with him in it was eating her alive. She hates her grand mom beause she force her into thr life of getting some one olde then herself.
ReplyDeleteJanie is finally glad to take off the head scraf after joe dies. Also she can finally of the stress he gave her
ReplyDeleteAfter Joe dies , Janie unties her hair and looks at herself in the mirror. While she looks at herself she thinks about her life over the past 20 years with Joe.
ReplyDeleteon the inside Janie feels free. Like she isn't a prisoner of unwanted "love" anymore. She doesn't care what anyone else thinks about how she feels.. She thinks that her life so far has been dull and not to her likings. She hasn't experienced love yet and she probably blames her Nanny for that because she was forced into marriage with a man she didn't love.

ReplyDeleteAfter Joe dies Janie goes to the mirror and takes off her scarf that Joe made her wear for 20 yrs because he was jealous. It was important to here because it meant that she was now free and she was no longer caged in her own home or body . what she feels on the inside is the feeling of finally being free from Joe and what the public expects of her because Joe was the only one who cared what people thought about them. I dont think it disrectful because Janie wasnt herself with Joe . She had to be someone she was not for the sake of what he thought was right . The only person olding her back was him and he is longer there so now no one could tell her what to do and be .Janie hated her Nanny because she held her from real love . She made Janie miss out on alot because of what she thought was right in her eyes .

ReplyDeleteIt hurt Janie because people would tell him lies instead of what was true. After Joe dies Janie feels free and happy, she takes off the scarf he had given her relieving all the stress she was feeling. Janie hated her grand mother because she forced her in getting with Joe and she didnt like Joe,but Janie didnt have a choice
ReplyDeleteAfter Joe dies Janie goes to the mirror to take off of the scarf that she had been wearing for years because of her husband's jealousy. After the death she feels happy and free doing things that she can do that she had never done before. I think she should feel happy and free because he didn't treat her right like he was suppose to. It was disrespectful that he didn't treat her like a queen because everyone knows that a TRUE king wouldn't put his hands on something valuable like that. on her journey she hopes to find someone that will treat her right since he didn't. Janie hates her grandmother because she didn't let her live her life the way she wanted to.
ReplyDeleteAfter Joe's death Janie goes to the mirror and unties her hair because during their relationship Joe made her keep her hair tied up because he felt it should be only for him to enjoy and no one else.
ReplyDeleteDuring Joe's funeral Janie's loyalty to him is questioned as she shows no such emotion but what she thinks the townspeople expect her to feel but inside she feels like a free soul.
I think Janie is truly sad at Joe's untimely death but those emotions conflict with her feelings of freedom and release from the burden Joe put on her.
Janie comes to realize that she has hatred towards her Grandmother because she never really got to live her life the way she wanted to but instead the way her Grandmother said it should be.
