Selma, Lord, Selma Chaps. 3 & 4

In chapters three and four Sheyann and Rachel both become more involved in the voting rights movement in Selma. They participate in the rallys at the church by singing "freedom" songs. What was the purpose of these songs? Why were they so important to the movement? They also attempt to participate in the early marches, which are unsuccessful. Why are the marchers initially turned back? Rachel's apartment is abuzz with people who are partcipating in the marches. Describe the mood in her apartment, and the concerns that some of the adults participating in the marches have. Tomorrow in class you will be expected to read chapters 5 & 6, and I will blog this weekend on chapters 7-9. You will also have a quiz on the book next Tuesday.

  1. The purpose of these songs were to portray the message of their demand for justice and freedom to show that they wanted it now and not later. They were important to the movement because it explained their reason clearly and in a way people could understand, to also lift their spirits and get them pumped and ready for the change the songs expressed.

The marchers were turned back at first because the public safety director Wilson Baker claimed that they did not have a parade permit.

Rachel's apartment is full of anxiety, fear, dread, and anger. But there was also hope, determination, and togetherness. The adults knew that tomorrow people would get arrested and people would loose their lives. Their own lives were at risk but they didn't care, they knew that things had to change and they were going anyway despite the risks. The adults were concerned with the fact that the sheriff will be after them, his horsemen called "possemen", and the thought of someone bombing the church or setting up a sniper.

  2. The purpose of these songs were to express how they felt about the movement throughout hymns and songs. They were important to the movement because they gave the marchers a sense of determination and motivated them to continue marching.
The marchers may have been turned around because the authorities could have viewed them as a threat to society,or they may have been trying to use violence in the March.
Rachel's apartment building was very moody. At any time it could be the place where visitors who were marching with Dr.King came, or it could be a depressing home. Some of the concerns adults who were marching had were, They didn't know if if by the e.nd of the March they would be dead,or if they would be put in jail just for standing up for what they believed in.

  3. The purpose of the songs selected was to motivate and encourage the blacks of all kinds have a right to speak up and also to fight in what they believed what's right. Rachel and sheyann made a statement while singing,"That All Blacks Young And Old Has Right Just Like The Whites".

The marchers initially turned backed because some feel as if any movement even one step could get someone killed. As they began to walk forward two or three together, Wilson Baker decide to stop the movement after two blocks.

Rachel apartment is filled with people that are angrying, sad, disappointed and attention. Not only that but pride and deftly faith. These knew tomorrow might bring. They didn't care as long as the blacks made a statement in what they deeply believed in. They even believed that gaining the right to vote would,in itself, open up all the other doors that had been closed.

  4. The songs purpose were to encourage colored people to have a voice and be outspoken and that they did have a right. The same rights as everyone else.
At first the marchers turned around because tgthey knew even if it was just one march someone could get hurt eventually Wilson turned them around after the 2 blocks.

  5. The songs purpose was to encourage black people to have a say and let them be heard. They too had the same rights as everyone else, no matter the skin color.

The marchers turned around because Wilson Baker did not have a license and they could have gotten hurt eventually.

Rachels apartment was filled with anger, disappointment, upset, sadness but a slight bit of hope as well. They knew that tomorrow at the march would be dangerous and many will loose their lives, get arrested and hurt. But they didn't care as long as their voice was heard and the Blacks made a statement that they had a belief in gaining the right to vote, they will march to show that they believe in what they stand for. And they all hoped to gain that right so it can open up many opportunities in the future for them.

  6. The purpose of the song was to show their bravery abd courage. They knew that the march they attend will be very dangerous and a task they will have to complete. They knew that it was a risk to march knowing that someone will get hurt but they kept on fighting on. They knew that justice was needed so the people did what they haf to do in order to achieve there dreams and goal.

  7. The purpose of the Freedom songs were to carry a message. They're trying to their FREEDOM.
They were turned around because they didn't have a parade permit. They are determined to fight for their freedom even though they have worries they push them to the back of their heads. All that they know is that they need each other.
