Freakonomics Chapter 6

Chapter 6 of Freakonomics is all about how parents name their children.  One of the points made in the chapter is that judgments are made (perhaps unfairly)by society based on our names, and that an unusual name can serve as a handicap to a child.  Do you agree with the book’s position?  Have you any personal experience with this topic?   How did the book use the experiment with the job applications to support the author’s position?  The book later makes the case that a child with an unusual or “typically Black” name isn’t a victim of a self fulfilling prophecy, explaining that the unusual name was generally an indicator of  the circumstances the child was born into, more so than a cause of their outcome, and that low-income, low-education parents have more of a tendency to name their child something unusual than would a high-income, high- education parent.  The statistics in the book actually bear out this claim.  Why do YOU believe this to be the case?  To what period in history does the book trace the trend of “typically black” baby names?   What point does the book make about people who change their names and what it indicates? Girls names tend to be more diverse than boys, as parents seem to be more adventurous with girls’ names. When looking at names across decades  you may notice that the “high end” white girls’ names eventually make the list of most popular white girl names.  What does this tell you about what a majority of those parents believe when it comes to naming children?  Why do the “high end” names become so popular?  What happens to the “high end” names when they DO become popular? This book was originally written in 2005. Cross check the list of potential most popular names of 2015 for boys and girls with the most recent twenty most popular names list and see if you can find any overlap.  How accurate were the books authors at their prediction?  In order to receive your participation credit, you must answer all the questions and respond to at least one of your classmates posts on the topic.  Please answer in complete sentences and remember that you are publishing your comments for an audience.

Selma, Lord, Selma chs 18 & 19

Chapter 18 of the book describes the events of Bloody Sunday from Rachel's point of view. It also goes into the aftermath of the events of that day. The terrified mood in the apartments lead to a more somber gathering at the church. What struck you about the demeanor of the marchers later that night? How does the mood in the church change as the night goes on? How do Sheyann and Rachel respond to this? Why, in chapter 19, does Sheyann begin to believe that, due to the events of that Sunday, the blacks in Selma had won the war for civil rights? What leads her to that realization? Do you agree or disagree with her? Please respond in complete sentences and remember, spelling counts!

In chapter 14, the violence and constant danger present in the movement comes home to the girls when someone is killed. Who was it? Why do you think this has such an impact on the girls? How do the people in Selma respond to what has happened? What stands out most to Sheyann about this person's funeral in Chapter 15? Please answer using complete sentences. Spelling counts! Selma, Lord, Selma Chapter 10

In Chapter 10 the action picks up. Rachel tells what life is like at her house, which is one of the hubs of the movement in Selma. She mentions some of the people who come to stay with them during this time, such as Jonathon Daniels and Samuel Morris. She also mentions several incidents that happen regarding her family. She tells how she, her sister, and Rev. Morris' son were attacked by some white teenagers as they left school. She also describes two separate incidents involving some of her sisters. These are all small, personal events when compared to the bigger picture of what was happening in Selma. Had you been alive during that time and these were the types of things happening to you and your family, how would you have responded? What would you have found most upsetting? Why? Be specific and use examples from the reading for comparison purposes. You have until Thursday morning to respond to this post.

Selma, Lord, Selma Chaps. 3 & 4

In chapters three and four Sheyann and Rachel both become more involved in the voting rights movement in Selma. They participate in the rallys at the church by singing "freedom" songs. What was the purpose of these songs? Why were they so important to the movement? They also attempt to participate in the early marches, which are unsuccessful. Why are the marchers initially turned back? Rachel's apartment is abuzz with people who are partcipating in the marches. Describe the mood in her apartment, and the concerns that some of the adults participating in the marches have. Tomorrow in class you will be expected to read chapters 5 & 6, and I will blog this weekend on chapters 7-9. You will also have a quiz on the book next Tuesday.
