TEWWG chs 13-15
In chapter 13, Janie leaves Eatonville to go meet Tea Cake in Jacksonville, where they are married and begin their life together. Janie almost immediately becomes suspicious of Tea Cake's motives when the money she brought with her disappears along with him. When he finally does return the next day he has quite a story to tell about a party he threw with her money. Janie’s reaction is to chastise him for having such a good time without her. My reaction probably would have been a lot different. What would you have done had such a scenario arisen in your romantic life? How does Tea Cake win Janie’s money back? Tea Cake then decides to move his new family down on the “muck” which is the locals’ nickname for the Florida Everglades, a large swampy area of Florida. Tea Cake and Janie move to the edge of Lake Okechobee. Early in chapter 14, there are a couple of instances of foreshadowing: One when Hurston describes the area where they live as only being separated from the lake by the dyke (dam), and the other when Tea Cake spends countless hours teaching Janie how to shoot a rifle. Both of these will be important to the story later on. Chapters 14 and 15 both give us insight into life on the “muck” as well as introducing us to a number of new “characters”. How would you describe Tea Cake and Janie’s life on the lake? Also, please give me your impressions of Chapter 15, which is the shortest chapter, but quite revealing about the relationship between Janie and Tea Cake. Please make sure you answer all questions and phrase your response in complete sentences. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

If my newly wed husband was to run off wit my money and spend it without telling me we would probably be heading to counseling because taking my money without telling me is stealing and we shouldn't be starting our marriage off like this. Tea Cake wins Janie's money back by gambling.I would say that their life on the lake gave them a lot of free time which gave Janie the opportunity to learn how to hunt and fish. Along with Janie becoming a great hunter their home becomes the center of attention, because people came from near and far to hear Tea Cakes guitar. In Chapter 15 it shows that Janie and Tea Cakes relationship is real (their relationship is being tested) because even though Janie is jeolous , Tea Cake makes sure that Janie knows that nothing is going on between him and Nunkie.
ReplyDeleteIf I was in a scenario like Janie, Me and tea Cake would have a major problem. You don't just take somebody money without asking them even if you are husband and wife. At least he won the money back and didn't lie to Janie. Tea Cake wins Janie's money back by gambling. Tea Cake and Janie's life on the lake is good. They are in a good place with helping each other, making time with it each other, and just enjoying there self and being free. In chapter 15 Tea Cake and Janie run into a problem when Tea Cake get caught with Nunkie in the cane field struggling. Janie already felt some type of way on the way Nunkie was acting towards Tea Cake so that situation added more anger and jealousy on Janie. Janie didn't like that and gets mad at Tea Cake and after all the arguing and wrestling things get a little heated.
ReplyDeleteIf I were in the situation I would be furiated because he should have told Janie what he was doing with the money. But then again I probably wouldn't have because since were married what's mine is his. However, Tea Cake wins the money back by playing dice and cards. So far their love life is going good. Their adapting to each other and growing attachment. To sum chapter 15 up, there's this name Nunkie who kept flirting with Tea Cake, Janie gets jealous cause of the girls actions. And like any other woman she assumes that he is cheating and tries to fight him.
