In Chapter 4 of Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie meets Joe Starks, who is unlike any black man she has ever met. Describe her impressions of him. How is he different than Logan?

Chapter 5 focuses on Joe and Janie’s new life in Eatonville. Joe puts his plans concerning
the town into action. What are some of the things he does when he gets to Eatonville?
How would you characterize Joe on the first two pages of chapter 5?  How is he viewed
by the people of the town? An emotional divide starts to show between Joe and Janie in
this chapter. Re-read this quote from chapter 5 “Thank yuh fuh yo’ compliments, but mah
wife don’t know nothin’ ‘bout no speech-makin’.Ah never married her for nothin’ lak dat.
She’s uh woman and her place is in de home.” In what context is this line delivered?
What’s Janie’s emotional reaction to that line?  How does this symbolize Joe and Janie’s
relationship and his ideas about her worth? Describe their different approaches to their
new position in town. Describe the scene around the lamplighting. Does it remind you of
anything? By the end of chapter 5 there is a shift in the way the town perceives Joe and
his possessions. How do the people of the town come to regard him? Re-read the last
paragraph of chapter 5. How does that paragraph summarize the relationship between
Joe and the people of the town?

  1. Her first impression of him was that she was shocked because she has never seen a black man dressed or look like this. Joe Starks is different from Logan because Logan is and old and unattractive man. And, his farm routines controls his life. Now, Joe Starks is not like. He is an outgoing person and has a outstanding trait, that is confidence. He never doubts his ability to accomplish his goals.
The thing Joe does when he first gets there to Eatonville is he paid cash for 200 acres of land. He opened a store and a post office. He bought the towns first street lamp. He organized the men and built a a road, He had also, built a drainage ditch.I would characterize him as a person that is trying to show leadership. He is viewed to the town people as a leader or a person that knows how to take charge. The line where Joe talked about His wife not being a public speaker came from the people giving speeches for the success of the town and store and wanted Joe wife to speak on her own behalf. Janie feels like it was wrong for Joe to react like that and would have liked to have tried to speak.Joe and Janie relationship is symbolic for Joe is the person in charge and Janie just being someone that doesn;t get to do what she wants . Her worth to Joe isn't to the people. Janie worth to Joe is for him and only him. Joe feels like her wife power isn't high enough for her words or actions to benefit the people unless she is doing house work. Because of Joe new position in town, he invested with his new dignity. But, his wife didn’t feel the same. The lamp lighting scene was filled with joy, prayer, people, music and speech. It reminded me of the feeling of success when people gets to up a new store. By the end of the chapter the towns feelings towards Joe has become more of hate and envy than love and support. In the last paragraph the town relationship with Joe will continue to be for them to bow down to Joe as he gave them commands.

  2. The impression Joe gave Janie was nothing she had seen before. When she heard whistling coming down the street, she saw a black man whom she never seen dressed nor carried himself in that way. Logan and Joe differ by their appearance and age, Logan was an older man who had a farm while Joe was a younger man who had high dreams.
When Janie and Joe arrives to Eatonville he suggests that they walk around for a bit. He complains about the town then he buys a few things for the town. Joe purchases 200 acres of land, opens a post office and a store, and the street lamps for the town. He comes into contact with a few men that later on helps build the new roads and the ditch.
I would characterize him as a very confident and dominant person. Before he left Middle Georgy with Janie, he showed all of the confidence by carrying himself well and having thoughts that no other man appeared to have and actually acted on it. I also think he is dominant because of the way he handles everyone when he arrives to Eatonville.
The people of the town view him as a leader because of his actions. He took control when he came to Eatonville which made people fall in line and help the town itself.
The people of Eatonville wanted Janie to speak on her experience and her own behalf instead of Joe speaking for her. Janie didn't like the way he handled the situation because she wanted to talk for herself and she was a little taken back from it. Joe is in control and Janie can't do what she wants which symbolizes a strain on their relationship after the incident with Joe gaining success with the store and the town. Joe Starks feels as if Janie's worth isn't for anybody other than him to know, that's why he feels as if she shouldn't speak for herself in any situation that is given. He feels like Janie doesn't have enough power to do anything nor speak to the people in the town. Joe only sees her eligible to do house work not talk to the people.
Joe is very thrilled about his new position, but Janie seems to becoming more unhappy as the days go by.
When the Lamp Lighting came about, it was filled with happiness, prayers, music, spoken words, and people. This reminded me of the beginning part of Chapter 5 when, Joe Starks made a new beginning for the people of Eatonville. At the end of the chapter, the people feelings began to wear off. It is more of jealousy and hate towards Joe now than it was before.
The people of the town realizes that they are better off with Joe, so they just deals with whatever Joe puts in front of them. They now realize that it was a mistake to begin with and he wasn't the person that he claims to be.

  3. Janie’s first impression of Joe was that he was nothing like the guys she was used to such as Logan and other men around town . Joe gave off a rich soul vibe , and when I say rich I don’t necessarily mean money , I’m referring to his soul , his character his demeanor. He walked around confident like he knew what he wanted out of life and he was going to get it by any means . Joe was different from
Logan because frankly Logan just sits in his town , work take care of things on his farm like an “everyday joe” . But Joe he had dreams , passion you can tell by the way he walks .

  4. Janie's first impression of Joe Starks was like no other. According to Janie, he was a cityfied, stylish dressed man with a personality and mindset she had never experienced before in other men. Joe and Logan were definitely two different people. Joe was a solemn man who had worked for whites most of his life and actually had a little money, Joe on the other hand was a hardworking, self-centered man who didn't really know how to treat Janie.
