TEWWG chs 13-15

In chapter 13, Janie leaves Eatonville to go meet Tea Cake in Jacksonville, where they are married and begin their life together. Janie almost immediately becomes suspicious of Tea Cake's motives when the money she brought with her disappears along with him. When he finally does return the next day he has quite a story to tell about a party he threw with her money. Janie’s reaction is to chastise him for having such a good time without her. My reaction probably would have been a lot different. What would you have done had such a scenario arisen in your romantic life? How does Tea Cake win Janie’s money back? Tea Cake then decides to move his new family down on the “muck” which is the locals’ nickname for the Florida Everglades, a large swampy area of Florida. Tea Cake and Janie move to the edge of Lake Okechobee. Early in chapter 14, there are a couple of instances of foreshadowing: One when Hurston describes the area where they live as only being separated from the lake by the dyke (dam), and the other when Tea Cake spends countless hours teaching Janie how to shoot a rifle. Both of these will be important to the story later on. Chapters 14 and 15 both give us insight into life on the “muck” as well as introducing us to a number of new “characters”. How would you describe Tea Cake and Janie’s life on the lake? Also, please give me your impressions of Chapter 15, which is the shortest chapter, but quite revealing about the relationship between Janie and Tea Cake. Please make sure you answer all questions and phrase your response in complete sentences. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  1. If I was in Janie's situation I would have been really upset that my lover had stolen from me. Tea Cake won Janie's money back by gambling, but gotten hurt in the process. Tea Cake and Janie's life on the lake was great. They were hard to separate, but in Chapter 15 came along a girl name Nunkie who liked Tea Cake. Janie grew very jealous of Nunkie and one day Nunkie and Tea cake disappeared. Janie went looking for them and found them wrestling, she grew angry. When Janie and Tea Cake for home she tried to fight him but failed.

  2. Well Ms.Price did you know it was Zora's Birthday today! Anyways I would have been very much upset about what Tea Cake did. First off you stold the money and then you gamble to get it back.

  3. I would've reacted very much like Janie. I would have been very upset to find out that my mate had taken my money without asking, but after finding out the reason why, if it was legitimate, I might've forgiven them. Once Janie discovered that Tea Cake had got the money back, by gambling, it calmed the situation.

Life on the muck was simple for Janie and Tea Cake. Tea Cake tells Janie he loves her, which was something her other husbands didn't do. To me this keeps the romance in their marriage. With her working with him on the muck, she shows how much she loves him.
In capter 15, Janie's jealousy over Nunkie flirting with Tea Cake demonstrates how much she really loves him. She didn't like it at all.

  4. Wow if my boyfriend/fiance/husband did that to me....the police would needed to be called. I would have flipped out on him, flipped out isn't even the proper word. Lets just say my black side would come out full force. That was MY money and he had no right to it and he didn't spend it on anything important which would have made me even more mad.

Tea Cake won the money back plus interest by gambling. He got lucky. Their life in the muck was a simple, yet plentiful lifestyle full of comforts and an equal marriage. They worked together in the fields and relaxed together with the same people out on the porch at night.

Their relationship can be described as a wild passionate flame that seems to never go out. The love they have for each other makes them act very, especially Janie irrationally and impulsively. Which leads to primal...relations.

  5. If i was in Janie's situation and the person i was in love with stole my money and didnt come back until the next day i would have been highly upset. I dont want to be with no one who is going to steal from me. Then after that he gambles it back.
