Selma, Lord, Selma Chapter 22
In the last chapter that takes place in 1965, we learn how Rachel was affected by all that happened in Selma that year. We also see the death of Jonathon Daniels, the young seminary student who was so well liked by the blacks of Selma. His death actually happens several months after the Selma to Montgomery march. There were several deaths that happened during the course of the book. Whose death do you personally consider the saddest, and why? The summer of 1965 saw the signing of the Voting Rights Act which prvented states from interefering with African American's constitutional right to vote. In the intro to chapter 22, there is a quote by President Lyndon Johnson "Let me now say to every Negro in this country: You must register. You must vote. You must learn so your choice advances your interest and the interest of our beloved country." Yet in the past 48 years since the passage of the act, African American voter turnout is consistently below that of other ethnic groups. It has fallen from 69% participation in 1964 to 58% by 2008. Why do you think this is so? How can more blacks be encouraged to vote? Explain Sheyann's statement at the end of chapter 23: "In those days we had a cause, something to strive for. Today, peorple don't seem to have anything to keep them going. They just go around trying to make a living."

I think Jonathon's death was the saddest because he did a lot to help the black community. I think it drop so low because they don't care as much as the others did. I think you can encourage blacks to vote by them getting into politics
ReplyDeleteI think Johnathan's death was the saddest because he was a man of God that was trying to help the blacks march and be able to have the right to vote. I think it has fallen because of the fact that a lot of blacks has died and given up. You can encourage them by letting them know if they don't vote then they will be living by a white mans world.
ReplyDeleteI think Johnathon's death was the saddest because he was the one that helped the blacks alot in his community. I think it dropped low because blacks didn't care alot like they were supposed to. You can encourage blacks to vote by making them understand why it is important for blacks to vote by comparing them to whites.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with all the following statements when I say that Johnathons death was the most tragic in that he was a much needed asset to the comunity. I think that the turn out dropped because african amerciacns had recieved what they fought so hard to get and after that they just felt no need to come out and support. I do disagree with the fact that there turnout is constantly falling because when president obama was running for office blacks from all around even the grave yard were trying to get there vot counted so I do beleive that we as african americans will come out to support if the topic of discussion is concerning us. As for the last statement it is because if its something not really concerning us we dont care.
ReplyDeleteBy reading chapters 22 and so far on I could possibly say Johnathans death was very tragic and sad. The reason why I say that is because he was white and all he wanted to do is prove that you can be any color or race to force the rights of voting. He was the only white person out there marching to get rights to vote and to have " freedom". I felt like the turn out dropped so bad like that is because blacks were scared to go through the same thing to vote again. Blacks can be more encouraged to vote by " money" Or something bribing them to do something but it has to be dealing with something that really can benefit them. What Sheyanns meant about that statement was back in their days of marching and trying to get freedom for their life they had an reason to do those things daily as marching and having voting rallies and things, Now days people just do crazy things and just honestly don't care what they do anything to live but doesn't have anything to strive for doing that.
